Method of planting lotus by seeds that you can apply to many different kinds of lotus
1. Select seeds and process them:
You should choose the lotus seeds which look big, old and swarthy instead of the small and soft one.
The primary thing you need to do first is to observe the lotus seeds carefully and then you will find there is a head that slightly concave inside. Due to the skin of the dry seeds pretty thick and hard, we need to support the germination process by using a shark knife to trim the upper crust off the nut.
Or you can use chopstick/sand paper to grind out the skin but be careful because you don’t want to scratch your seeds. Not only does this action support the seeds in the germination process but also does it help the seeds not rot from the inside.
Put these seeds in a cup of water at 20 to 30 degree C ( the best temperature should be 21 degree C). Soaking water should be changed every day (2 times per day, the first time is in the morning and the other time is in the evening) and we should keep doing this until germination.
Attention, only the seeds which sink can have ability to sprout and for the one which emerge on the surface water should be removed.
After 3-5 days, you will see a small green germ sprout out from every seed. During this period, keep changing water in that cup but you should be careful and as gently as possible to avoid affecting the germs.
At this time, we should prepare the place for growing lotus by dissolving the alluvial soil or soil in water before taking the seeds out from water and planting them.
Wait until the germs 15cm long ( about 2 weeks of soaking) then start to grow them in the prepared soil.
2. Transfer the premature lotus into the new habitat:
After 2 weeks, the germs will reach a height of about 15 cm. At that instance, we should build a whole new habitat which is more suitable for the premature lotus development.
You should choose clay or pottery jar or even swarthy plastic bowl might be a good choice because this kind of container could absorb the heat much better and keep the premature plants warm. You should remind that no matter what kind of container you choose, it shouldn’t have any drainage hole because lotus usually lives in lagoon. Therefore, it is very imperative to retain water.
The ideal type of land to grow lotus should follow the ratio of 2 parts of clay and 1 part of sandy mud. Pour into the pot of this mixture so as to the proportion of soil about 15cm is enough for building a new habitat for premature tree development as well as the amount of water in that pot should only 10cm higher than that of soil. If you want the plant you grow can have flower, you should grow it in larger habitat.
After 2 months, you will experience how the tree become mature as well as its height at this time will reach at 30 to 40 cm. Some attentions:
• The soil to plant lotus need to be clean soil/mud which not polluted. If you doubt that your soil is polluted, about a week before put the tree into soil, you should sprinkle a little spoon of powdered lime over the soil to disinfect as well as eliminate the sour
• After 7 to 10 days of planting lotus in pot, you can add to the soil some different kinds of fertilizer but the most suitable one is NPK and you also remark about the amount of fertilizer when you put in
• Lotus grow underwater often has high resistance as well as no disease but sometimes it can be attacked by leaf feeding caterpillars, aphids, caterpillars and so on. These species are attracted by lotus, that’s why you need to check the tree permanently so that the leaf which is eaten by worm can be cut down as well as avoid the worm’s attack
• You should change the pot once a year and the best time to change is in the early spring, when the development of the tree just begin. Lotus should be plant the pot that has the same depth as the old one.
